**EXCLUSIVE: Dree Hemingway to Executive Produce New Film ‘The Hemingway Files’ Exploring Ernest Hemingway’s Final Years**
Actress and model Dree Hemingway, known for her roles in *Starlet* and *While We’re Young*, is set to executive-produce a compelling new film about her legendary great-grandfather, Ernest Hemingway. Titled *The Hemingway Files*, the film will delve into the iconic writer’s last years, revealing a deeply personal and empathetic portrayal of the man behind the legend.
*The Hemingway Files* follows Ernest Hemingway during a turbulent period marked by his deepening mental health struggles. The story explores his relationships with close friends A. E. Hotchner and Duke MacMullen, who support him through these difficult times. It also sheds light on his strained connection with his transgender daughter Gloria Hemingway, as well as his growing paranoia surrounding the belief that the FBI, under J. Edgar Hoover’s direction, was monitoring him.
Produced by Jeremy Bolt (*Resident Evil*), the film will be directed by Jessica M. Thompson, whose impressive credits include the SXSW-winning debut *The Light Of The Moon*, the Screen Gems thriller *The Invitation* — which grossed $38 million worldwide — and the Showtime series *The End*. The project is being developed under JB Pictures, with a script penned by Cory Todd Hughes and Adrian Speckert (*Armor*). Casting discussions are currently underway.
Ernest Hemingway remains one of America’s most totemic authors, a Nobel Prize winner whose works like *The Sun Also Rises*, *A Farewell to Arms*, *For Whom The Bell Tolls*, and *The Old Man and The Sea* have left an indelible mark on literature.
Reflecting on the project, Dree Hemingway said, “My great-grandfather’s story has been told many times but rarely with this level of empathy and honesty. *The Hemingway Files* is about understanding him not as an icon, but as a father, a friend, and a man trying to hold on to himself.”
Screenwriters Hughes and Speckert shared a joint statement: “This is one of the most important scripts of our lives. Dree Hemingway’s support and trust in this project mean the world to us. We feel a deep responsibility to tell the truth of what Hemingway endured in those last years—his battles with his mind, his government, and his heart. The world deserves to know who he really was beneath the myth.”
Director Jessica M. Thompson added, “My vision is to approach Hemingway’s decline with empathy and honesty. I want to peer underneath the mask of Hemingway’s legend and lay bare the truth of this multifaceted artist. I’m fascinated by the intersection of myth and reality. Hemingway’s story isn’t just about a writer grappling with obsolescence—it’s about the cost of masculinity, the fragility of family, and the truth that even the strongest among us can struggle.”
Several screen projects have previously explored Hemingway’s life, including the 2012 HBO film *Hemingway & Gellhorn*, the 2015 movie *Papa: Hemingway in Cuba*, and Ken Burns’ 2021 documentary series, *Hemingway*.
*The Hemingway Files* promises to be a fresh, honest, and deeply moving exploration of one of America’s most enduring literary figures — a film that aims to tell the story behind the myth and reveal the man Ernest Hemingway truly was.
