FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — Seth Cromwell powered Northern Arizona with two of the Lumberjacks’ five rushing touchdowns, while Kolbe Katsis electrified the crowd with a 100-yard kickoff return as Northern Arizona defeated Northern Colorado 49-10 on Saturday.
Northern Arizona quarterback Ty Pennington opened the scoring early with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jayson Raines about seven minutes into the game. Darvon Hubbard added a 4-yard rushing touchdown late in the first quarter. Quran Gossett extended the lead with a 7-yard touchdown run, making it 21-3 with two minutes remaining in the second quarter.
Northern Colorado answered with a 3-yard touchdown run by Brandon Johnson, capping a 10-play, 73-yard drive with just 23 seconds left in the first half. However, Katsis immediately shifted momentum with his 100-yard kickoff return touchdown, giving Northern Arizona a 28-10 lead heading into halftime.
The kickoff return was a milestone for the Lumberjacks — their first since 2017, also against the Bears.
In the third quarter, Cromwell found the end zone twice more on runs of 2 and 7 yards. Ryan Fontaine closed out the scoring for Northern Arizona with a 7-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Pennington had an impressive outing, completing 19 of 22 passes for 255 yards. For Northern Colorado, Eric Gibson Jr. went 17 of 28 for 151 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions.
Northern Arizona improved to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in Big Sky Conference play, while Northern Colorado fell to 3-6 and 1-4 in the conference.
