Sheffield Chamber Orchestra’s 75th Anniversary: A Lifetime of Musical Harmony

Posted on 2025 年 11 月 10 日 by admin

**Sheffield Chamber Orchestra Celebrates 75 Years of Music Excellence**

*Monday 10 November, 2025*

This year marks a significant milestone for the Sheffield Chamber Orchestra as it celebrates its 75th anniversary. The orchestra, a beloved institution in Sheffield, has become a staple in the city’s vibrant music scene.

One of its longest-standing members, Mike Jackson, MBE, has been part of the ensemble since 1957, playing a crucial role in its growth and success. Having participated in orchestras during his school and university days, Mike joined Sheffield Chamber Orchestra at a pivotal time in its history.

**A Rich History**

The orchestra was founded within the University of Sheffield’s music department under the leadership of Professor Stuart Deas. Renowned for his high standards and dynamic conducting style, Professor Deas led the orchestra in performing ambitious repertoires, often featuring contemporary works and attracting renowned soloists such as Clifford Curzon, Marisa Robles, and members of the Amadeus String Quartet.

Mike fondly remembers the excitement and terror of performing under Deas’s direction, saying:

> “He had the engaging habit of conducting the finales of Haydn symphonies at a speed never achieved in rehearsal—a hair-raising experience for yours truly!”

**A Community of Musicians**

As the orchestra grew, so did its sense of community. When the Lindsay String Quartet arrived in Sheffield, their players took on leadership roles in the orchestra’s string sections, elevating performances to new artistic heights. Dedicated members like Roger Hayward, who chaired the orchestra for over 20 years, helped build a sustainable, player-run organization—a tradition that continues today.

In the early 1970s, Mike succeeded Roger as Chair and worked closely with conductor and composer Chris Wiltshire. Together, they premiered new works, including Chris’s own *Concerto for Orchestra*, which Chris jokingly described as being designed “to test the abilities of every member to the utmost.”

The orchestra also launched its long-running “Accent on Youth” program, which provides talented young musicians with opportunities to perform major concertos—a legacy still thriving today. Mike recalls an amusing rehearsal when they were preparing Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto with three secondary school pupils when a young lady quietly walked in. Mike quickly reassured her they were ready for her big moment, only to be told, “Actually, I’m the clarinet teacher!”

**Challenges and Generosity**

Financial challenges have always been a part of the orchestra’s story, but acts of generosity have made a significant difference. A legacy from music lover Arthur Humphrey provided stability during lean years. Today, the orchestra is supported by loyal Patrons and season sponsors, including Agincare and Turner Violins.

Successive conductors—Harry Malpass, Robin McEwan, and now Laurence Perkins—have each left their mark, nurturing the orchestra’s signature blend of professionalism, warmth, and community spirit.

Mike notes:

> “It’s remarkable that in 75 years, only five people have served as Chair. The loyalty and dedication of our members are extraordinary.”

**A Bright Future**

With Julie Ryan as the current Chair, Laurence Perkins as Music Director, and Ralph Dawson as Professional Leader, the Sheffield Chamber Orchestra continues to perform to packed audiences. The orchestra offers “first-rate public performances of a wide range of musical experiences.”

Mike Jackson was awarded an MBE “for services to the community in Sheffield” in the 2024 New Year’s Honours List. As he celebrates both his 90th birthday and his 68th year as a playing member, Mike’s enthusiasm for the orchestra shows no signs of waning.

He says:

> “The thrill and commitment of our wonderful orchestra continues to inspire. It’s been a privilege to be a part of it and long may it continue.”

**Upcoming Concert**

The orchestra’s next concert takes place on **Saturday 29th November** at **All Saints Church, Ecclesall**, starting at **7:30 pm**. The programme will feature works by Mendelssohn, Wagner, Telemann, and the world premiere of a new piece by British composer Dominic McGonigal.
