Nebraska Volleyball’s Coach Reacts as Consecutive Set Victory Streak Ends
On Friday, November 14, 2025, the Nebraska Huskers volleyball team faced off against the UCLA Bruins at the Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles. In front of a crowd of 10,498 fans, Nebraska secured a 3-1 victory over UCLA, continuing their dominant 2025 season. However, despite the win, the Bruins managed to break the Huskers’ impressive streak of 48 consecutive sets won in sweeps.
The Huskers started strong, taking the first two sets 25-17 and 25-23. But in the third set, UCLA turned up the intensity, overpowering Nebraska 25-19. It was at this point that the Nebraska coaching staff, including Head Coach Dani Busboom Kelly, realized the Bruins were stepping up their defensive effort.
“[The] coaching staff told the team that they were being outplayed and outworked defensively,” said Coach Busboom Kelly.
In the fourth set, Nebraska made a powerful comeback. Harper Murray and Rebekah Allick contributed a block and a kill respectively, helping the Huskers gain an early 4-1 advantage. Jackson and Murray continued to add kills, extending the lead to 10-4. With Allick’s 13th kill of the match, Nebraska closed out the set and secured the victory.
Mental Approach After Losing a Set
Rebekah Allick opened up about the team’s mindset following the loss of a set. In an interview with *Hail Varsity*, she shared insights into how the Huskers maintain focus on the process rather than the outcome, drawing on lessons from former coach John Cook.
“Just keep playing,” Allick said. “I feel like if we become fixated on the outcome, it has never ever worked in anyone’s favor. So just staying in the moment is huge and a big takeaway that I have from John Cook, like just coaching me over the last few years.”
She added that while not losing a set is an accomplishment, it doesn’t guarantee victory in crucial matches.
“He almost used to come with a little bit of an attitude when we were ranked number one. He was like, ‘So you think you guys can just coast this week because you’re ranked number one?’ Just this and that.”
“Yeah, it’s an accolade, but it’s nothing more than an Instagram post. It doesn’t decide if you want the national championship or conference title or anything. So it’s something to be cool and like, ‘Oh yeah, that’s nice,’ but it doesn’t determine your win on Friday or Saturday night.”
Looking Ahead
The Nebraska volleyball team will next compete against the USC Trojans on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, California. Fans will be eager to see if the Huskers can continue their strong performance as the season progresses.
