DETROIT (AP) — Mattias Samuelsson scored just 1:05 into overtime as the Buffalo Sabres rallied from a three-goal deficit to snap a five-game losing streak with a 5-4 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night.
Tage Thompson contributed a goal and assisted on Samuelsson’s overtime winner. Josh Doan also had a goal and an assist, helping Buffalo secure their first road victory of the season. Before this game, the Sabres were 0-5-2 on the road, the only team in the league yet to earn a road win.
Ryan McLeod scored the tying goal on a short-handed breakaway, while Alex Tuch also found the back of the net. Goaltender Colten Ellis made 24 saves for Buffalo. Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin added an assist after returning to the lineup following a three-game leave of absence. Dahlin spent the previous week in Sweden visiting his fiancée, who is recovering from heart transplant surgery.
For the Red Wings, Alex DeBrincat scored two goals for the second consecutive game. He also had two goals and an assist against Anaheim on Thursday. Dylan Larkin notched his team-high 11th goal of the season, and Patrick Kane scored his first goal since October 15. Lucas Raymond assisted on three goals, and goaltender John Gibson made 22 saves.
The teams traded goals 29 seconds apart midway through the first period. Patrick Kane tapped in a pass from Ben Chiarot to give Detroit the early lead, but Alex Tuch quickly responded with a backhand shot after Gibson failed to control a loose puck in the crease.
Detroit held a 4-2 advantage after two periods. Raymond assisted on all three Red Wings’ goals during the middle frame. Larkin lifted a shot into the upper left corner during a four-on-four situation between DeBrincat’s two goals in the period.
Late in the second, Doan scored for Buffalo by deflecting a shot from Dahlin at the point. Thompson’s goal at 4:25 of the third period pulled Buffalo within one. McLeod’s short-handed goal midway through the period tied the game and sent it into overtime.
Up next, the Sabres will host the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night. The Red Wings will visit the New York Rangers on Sunday.
