How to reach new residential tiers in Anno 117: Pax Romana To unlock residential tier 1 in Anno 117: Pax Romana, all you need to do is place a single residential building, but to unlock residential tier 2, you must upgrade a tier 1 residence to tier 2. From residential tier 1 onward, the general process remains the same: Fulfill all residential needs for the current tier, and you may upgrade to the next. To fulfill all tier 1 residential needs, you must provide enough food, public services, and fashion. You can click on a residential tier 1 building to view the progress. It’s not necessary to provide every good or service listed; you just need to fulfill the category. So, to reach tier 2 in Anno 117, providing sardines, tunics, and a marketplace would be enough. Reaching residential tier 3 is where things truly get complex, as you may no longer rely on your first island alone. This time, you must provide food, services, fashion, and household items to satisfy your tier 2 residents and upgrade them to tier 3. How to reach residential tier 3 in Latium in Anno 117 To reach tier 3 on Anno 117’s Latium map, it’s best to send out some ships to explore the map as soon as possible, so you can find the island fertilities needed to produce the household items. Also, be sure to have at least one clay pit, charcoal burner, and tiler, as you’ll need tiles to build most of the workplaces mentioned below. Food: Add enough fishing huts to ensure the first “food” need, sardines, is fulfilled. If you already have a high porridge production, that’s also fine. Since this already grants a decent population buff, add a garum production line next it’s easier than bread. Start with one salt pond, one scomber’s shack, and one garum production, but since the latter is rather slow, you can ultimately work up to three garum production buildings (without needing extra resources). Public Service: Add either a market (more money) or a tavern (more happiness) and a grammaticus. The grammaticus has a lower maintenance cost than the sanctuary and provides knowledge, which means you can start researching technologies while you work toward residential tier 3. Fashion: Provide either tunics or pileus hats. Pileus might be the better option, not just because of the happiness bonus but because sheep production is very fast, making it easier to keep the pileus felter stocked. Next, you either need sandals or soap. Soap is highly recommended because it provides the best health bonus in the early-game, and you can use small lavender fields (as described in our Anno 117 beginner’s guide) to unlock extra happiness bonuses throughout your city. For one soap maker, you need one pig farm, one renderer, and one charcoal burner, but make sure to place every resource production building outside the town limits to avoid debuffs! Place at least two large lavender fields outside town and (optionally) five to six tiny ones throughout the city. Household: First, find an island with either resin or olive fertility. Be sure to load your ship with timber and clay, place a trading post on that island, and build a basic tier 2 town. Be sure to scout other islands for tin fertility early on, so you can produce household goods as soon as possible. Food: Produce enough eels or cockles. Cockles are best for a small town, as building them in close proximity to residential buildings offers a massive income bonus. Next, produce either cheese or beer. Cheese is far easier as you only need one ochs farm to supply two cheese producers. Public Service: Add either a market (more money) or bardic hearth (more happiness) and a fanum. Thanks to the +1 knowledge bonus, the fanum will allow you to start researching technologies. Fashion: Provide either tunics or reed shoes. Tunics might be easier as you don’t need marshland to obtain the resources (hemp). Next, produce either trousers or torcs. The torc production line takes up far less space and may therefore be preferable: Just add one copper mine and one charcoal burner, then place two or three wire-twisters in the city. Find an island with tin fertility, place a trading post, and set up a basic tier 2 town (be sure to bring timber, wattle, and tiles on the ship). Use a trade route to ship the tin to your original island, and build a horner here. You can go for the ceremonial shields, too, but they’re far more complex than drinking horns, so it’s best to start with the latter.
