Macaulay Culkin, widely known for his iconic role as the young protagonist Kevin McCallister in the classic films Home Alone (1990) and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), recently shared his idea for a potential sequel during a stop on his A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin tour. He stated: “I kind of had this idea. I’m either a widower or a divorcee. I’m raising a kid and all that stuff. I’m working really hard and I’m not really paying enough attention and the kid is kind of getting miffed at me and then I get locked out. [Kevin’s son] won’t let me in. and he’s the one setting traps for me.” Featured in the first two films in the franchise, Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin is a bright, imaginative, but sometimes troublesome young boy who his family accidentally leaves behind. He is forced to defend himself and the house from criminals and burglars while his family is away on luxury trips. Macaulay Culkin’s views on his role for a potential Home Alone sequel At the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center in Long Beach, California, during a Q&A session, Macaulay Culkin, who is open to reprising his role in a potential Home Alone sequel, shared that he would do it if the script were “just right.” He further elaborated on the emotional core of his proposed sequel, suggesting that the iconic booby-trapped house would function as a powerful metaphor for the fractured relationship between the adult Kevin McCallister and his son. He explained that Kevin’s primary goal wouldn’t be to defeat burglars, but to navigate the traps set by his own child, in a bid to “get let back into [his] son’s heart.” However, the film’s original director, Chris Columbus’s views contrast with that of Culkin’s regarding the revival of the iconic franchise. In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight in August 2025, The Thursday Murder Club director stated: “I think ‘Home Alone’ really exists as, not at this timepiece, but it was this very special moment, and you can’t really recapture that. I think it’s a mistake to try to go back and recapture something we did 35 years ago. I think it should be left alone.” The Home Alone film franchise became a massive success, primarily driven by the original 1990 film, which premiered in the United States on November 16, 1990. It became a global phenomenon, grossing nearly $477 million worldwide against an $18 million budget, and for years, held the record for the highest-grossing live-action comedy. In the U. S., all films are currently available to stream on Disney+ and are also frequently broadcast on Freeform during their annual “25 Days of Christmas” event. The first two films are also available to rent or buy through services like Prime Video, Apple TV, and Google Play. Stay tuned for more updates.
