Los Angeles Chargers coach and former University of Michigan Wolverines football coach Jim Harbaugh has shared his reaction to the firing and criminal charges involving Sherrone Moore.
Harbaugh, 61, originally hired Moore, 39, as the Wolverines’ tight ends coach in 2018. During the 2023 season, Moore served as acting head coach while Harbaugh was suspended. In 2024, Harbaugh left Michigan after nine seasons to coach the NFL’s San Diego Chargers, and Moore was promoted to head football coach.
On Wednesday, December 11, Moore was fired after the University announced it had evidence that he engaged in an alleged “inappropriate relationship with a staff member.” Hours later, Moore was detained by police.
The following day, Friday, December 12, Moore was formally charged with third-degree home invasion, a felony, as well as two misdemeanors, including stalking.
“Still processing that like a lot of people, I’m sure,” Harbaugh told reporters when asked about the news after Chargers practice, according to ESPN.
Moore made his first court appearance at his arraignment on Friday. Prosecutor Kati Rezmierski accused Moore of stalking and allegedly threatening to take his own life after his termination.
Rezmierski explained that the staff member involved had ended their relationship with Moore on Monday, December 8, after several years together. Following the breakup, Moore allegedly sent unwanted messages to the woman, prompting her to notify school officials, which led to his firing.
Moore then allegedly drove to and entered the woman’s apartment. There, authorities say he grabbed butter knives and kitchen scissors and threatened self-harm.
“I’m gonna kill myself, I’m gonna make you watch,” Moore reportedly told the woman. Rezmierski stated that Moore also said, “My blood is on your hands. You ruined my life.”
After these threats, the woman informed Moore that she was contacting her attorney. The attorney then alerted authorities, which led Moore to flee the scene.
Dispatch issued a notice about an individual matching Moore’s vehicle and license plate information. Around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Moore was taken into custody at the Washtenaw Corrections Division.
On Friday, Moore was granted pretrial release with bail set at $25,000. His release includes several conditions: he must wear a GPS tether, continue receiving mental health treatment, and have no contact with the alleged victim.
Moore’s probable cause hearing is scheduled for January 22.
