A male suspect was wounded Thursday when San Diego police opened fire on him following a chase that ended in a chain-reaction crash.
The pursuit, which began shortly after 12:30 p.m., started in Lincoln Park and continued to the La Presa community. According to SDPD Officer Colin Steinbroner, a patrol officer attempted to pull over the suspect near Euclid and Imperial avenues. The driver, believed to be operating a stolen vehicle, refused to yield and fled eastward.
The chase eventually led officers to the unincorporated area north of Sweetwater Reservoir. Around 1:30 p.m., the suspect lost control of the stolen car at Gillespie Drive and Jamacha Road, causing it to crash off the roadway. The vehicle then struck a light pole, which fell onto an SDPD cruiser.
At that point, one or more officers opened fire, wounding the suspect. Paramedics transported him to a trauma center for treatment.
An officer was also treated at the scene for cuts sustained when the fallen pole broke a window on a patrol vehicle, Steinbroner added.
